Magpie and the Dandelion is the eleventh album (and eighth studio album) of the American folk-rock band The Avett Brothers. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and his company American Recordings. The standard edition of Magpie contains 11 songs and the deluxe edition contains 4 additional demos.

The album's title and release date were announced on NPR's All Songs Considered on August 8, 2013 along with the first single from the album "Another is Waiting." The album became available for streaming in entirety on October 8, 2013 at 11pm ET on NPR's First Listen. 

Magpie and the Dandelion released on digital, vinyl, and CD on October 15, 2013. It peaked at #5 on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 for it's first week of sales, selling 58,000 copies in the first 7 days. It received generally favorable reviews from critics.

In June 2012, while talking about their recording sessions for The Carpenter The Avett Brothers revealed they recorded 24 songs, only 15 of which (including exclusive tracks) ended up on The Carpenter.[1]

On June 12, 2013 the band first revealed they were planning on releasing a new album in September or October of 2013 during an interview with radio.com. They said it was recorded at the same time as The Carpenter and that some of the songs had been in the works for 7-8 years:

“The Carpenter was the first installment and this is the other part. We initially thought of this as part two…but we realize it’s its own thing. It’s a very interesting occurrence we didn’t intend. It’s a nice surprise.”— Scott Avett, 6/12/13[2]

On June 29, 2013 The Avett Brothers performed a short set on Minnesota Public Radio's The Current and played for the first time "Part From Me" which they revealed would be on their forthcoming album.[4]

Throughout summer 2013 the band would mention at their concerts that they were planning on releasing a new album in the autumn. At their shows at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO they spoke about the album before playing "The Morning Song" and "Skin and Bones".

On August 8, 2013 the band released an open letter to the press announcing and describing Magpie and the Dandelion. The first official single, "Another is Waiting" was also released on NPR's All Songs Considered.

On August 16 the band revealed the album artwork and the tracklist was revealed on August 20 when the album went up for presale on iTunes.[5]

In August and September, the band continued to play "Another is Waiting" at their concerts in Europe and North America. They also began playing "Vanity" on August 22. The Avett Brothers performed an extended cut of "Another is Waiting" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on September 23 and premiered "Vanity" with guest singer Chris Cornell on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on September 30 where they also performed in a skit titled "The Avett Brothers Sing Heavy Metal."

Pre-order bundles of Magpie went on sale October 1 including an instant download of "Vanity". The music video for "Another is Waiting", directed by Scott Avett, premiered on EW.com on October 2. Watch it here.

On October 7, 2013, eight days before Magpie was set to be released the band performed "Morning Song" on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The album became available for streaming in entirety one week before release on October 8, 2013 at 11pm ET on NPR's First Listen​, the first time "Bring Your Love To Me" was heard by the public.

We wanted to let you know what we’ve been up to this year.

It’s been one of the most amazing years in our lives up to this point. Not only did we get our first Grammy Award nomination, but we played some of the most incredible shows we’ve ever done. That’s what we really remember. Every night, there was this energy in the air. You could feel it in the gusts of wind or as the stars blanketed the sky. Everybody felt it, and it made each gig simply electric.

We’ve got to let you in on a little secret because you’ve been so good to us. While we were working on The Carpenter, we were so inspired that we wrote another record as well. During those sessions, we just felt it. Working with Rick Rubin again, we tapped into something very special. It’s like everybody was in the same zone.

Now, we’re ready for you to hear the record. It’s called Magpie and the Dandelion, and it’s out October 15. It’s new and being heard for the first time.

If you think about a Magpie, it’s a bird from the crow family. You can see them everywhere, and they’ve got this strange grace. And, we all know what a dandelion is. It reminds you of being a kid and watching a flower come apart on a summer day. There’s a youthful wonder in that. Those kinds of feelings live and breathe inside this album.

The tracklist was revealed on August 20, 2013 when the album was released for presale on iTunes.

Both "Another is Waiting" and "Part From Me" (incorrectly labeled "Apart From Me") were previously confirmed and "Morning Song" and "Skin and Bones" were hinted to by the band on their 2013 tour.

Two tracks on Magpie marks milestones for the band: "Souls Like the Wheels" previously appeared on their 2008 EP The Second Gleam and the Magpie track is a live version recorded at the only public performance of the song at a September 29, 2012 concert in St. Louis, MO. (The band has since begun playing a full band version of the song.) Additionally, "The Clearness is Gone" was previously available on the limited edition "Live and Die" 7" released in 2012.

Magpie released to generally favorable reviews from critics, earning an average review of 63 on Metacritic.com.[6]
